A FATAL FIRE.
MAN' SUFFOCATED AT ALICETOWN.
At 2.30 a.m. 011 Saturday morninjf, a firo occurred at Victoria Street, A.iootowi), in which a single man, aged 40, named Thomas Jenkins, was suflocated. When llio brigade arrived in retpouse to an alarm tho cottage was in flames, and no time was lost in subduing them, Ill© building was gutted, and on an inspection being made llio body was found slightly scorched. Kverytiiing powiblo was done to restore life, but the ellorts wore of no avail. Demised was well known in the Jlult Valley, and was engaged as ii "puller" ill the fellinongvry at the Geur Company's works. At 3 p.m. on Saturday an inquest wns opened by Mr. Kiddell (coroner), at tlio liailway Hotel, Hull. Kdwavd Hobuian, a member of the Firo Brigade, doposed that h<; went into the building, in company with the foreman, ufter the lire had been sot under. Ho saw the deceased lying on the floor, apparently dead. The body was in .sleeping apparel, mid the bud had bseii used. William Henry Winnio suit! he last saw deceased on Thursday. Jenkins was quite sober, and was a man of regular habits. George Wright, u work-male of the deceased, said that Jenkins had finished work at 3 o'clock on Friday, and witness had not seen him since. He was very steady in his habits. A verdict of death from "suffocation" was returned.
