(By TeleffrapU—Press Association^ __ SENSATION AT A FIRE. Auckland, December 8. A firo iii Eden Street, Mount Eden, last night, destroyed n six-roomed house occupied by Mrs. R. Kiloy. Two neighbours observed the'outbreak, and found Mrs. Eiley lving on the verandah of, the burning building in her night attiro in a semi-conscious state. She murmured there were three children in the building, find then collapsed. One child, a son of Mrs. Martin (who i? Mrs. Eiley s sister) was rescued'from tho back room. He was severe!v burned, and was taken to the hospital. One btlior little boy was found 'enffering from burns, but less severely. A third child, a littlo girl, escaped without 'injury. Mrs. Riley is suffering severely from "shock. Tho origin of the firo Is unknown. AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS. Auckland, December 8. At the musical competitions last night, Hio winners, all Aucklanders, were:— Piano solo (under 18), Alison Snodgrass; euphonium solo, G. Clarke; sacred contralto solo, Miss E. Haro; tenor solo, W. Waltor; duet by gentlemen, A. E. Eipley find M. Orchard; dramatic recital, T. Harris; character sketch, Miss Barkley. SUPREME COURT, Auckland, December 8. At the Supremo Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Chapman, Jas. Whiting was found guilty of attempting to. carnally know and criminal assault. He was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. •ULTIMATUM, i Auckland, December 8. Jack Everett was arrested on a charge of stabbing Ben Barker, who has been removed to'the hospital with a wound in tho ohest and both hands badly out. Ho had attempted to get tho knife from his antagonist. Barker's injuries are not likely to prove fatal.
