—; —_* : SHOCKING MOTOR EVENT. DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN. RESIDENT OF WAIRARAPA. . (Bj Teleßraph.-SDcci.Tl Correspondent.), Masterton, December 2. A shocking motor fatality occurred on the hill about, five miles to the north ot Masterton this afternoon. Mr. John Cotter, ' a well-known settler of Greytowu, had purchased a new; motor-car, and was driving with a friend to his home at Groytown from Palmcrston, North. He was coming down Day's Hill when something went wrong with the machine, and it was precipitated-down an embankment. The occupants, seeing their peril, jumped out, and, in doing so, Mr. Cotter fell on his head and was killed instantly. The other occupant of the car escaped with bruises. Mr. .Cotter was between fifty and sixty years, of age, and was one of the most highly-respected settlers in the district. Ho loaves a widow and ono daughter (Mrs. White, of Torangahau). SMASH IN A ROAD RACE. (By TclcEraDb.- Press Association.) Auckland, December 2. A nasty accident occurred during the progress of a bicycle road'race last night by which a boy named W. Shaw collided witlv another competitor, and fell tc the ground, striking with such force that he was rendered unconscious. The injuries to his head are very serious. TWO SHOOTING ACCIDENTS. Christchurch, December 3. Two shooting accidents were reported vesterdav. While Ernest Shakleton, aged 17, .residing at; Linwood, ..was getting through a fence. carrying a gun it went off, and'he received the charge in the side His condition is somewhat serious. John - Campbell, aged 19, residing at Addington, when out shooting slipped on a stone, and to save himself threw his gun-from him;. it went-off, however, and ho' received the charge in the foot and thigh. There is no clue to his identity. The body had apparently been in the river for a fortnight. It is that of a person between. 35 and 40 years old, and sft. 9in. in height. • -KILLED BY A RESTIVE HORSE. , Napier, December 1. An accident attended with fatal results occurred to a well-known resident of Clivc, named James Burt/on lhursday. It appears-that Mr. Burt went into a paddock to catch a hers© which was rather difficult to deal witn. He gut a ropo round .the horse's neck, when it made a'plunge.. Mr.-Burt somehow be r caino entangled in the ropo and was dragged round tho paddock at a furious pace. When rescued ho was unconscious. Ho was removed to the' Napier Hospital whero he died to-day.
