OTAKI.
A well-attended' meeting, was held at Paekakariki in support of the candidature of Mr. John Robertson, the Labour nominee for Otaki. Mr. Gapes occupied the chair. Mr. Robertson briefly outlined the facts concerning his nomination by' tho Flaxmill Workers' Union. He denied a rumour that had been circulating to the effect that in the event' of a second ballot in which ho did not take part the party support would be given either to the Govprnment or the Opposition* No such arrangement had been made,- nor had he or his supporters been approached in'the matter. After dealing with the land question,-Mr: Robertson "said he was opposed to'tho. compulsory rluu'ses'in tho Defence Act, and regarded the 'substitution of, military discipline for 1 pi>rental control as dangerous. The' candidate made clear his.position as regards'civil service reform' in the course of his replies to a.serios.of qnestions handed.in. by the .local"secretary- of the Amalgamated Societylo.f.Raiiwaymen.. A "vote of thanks and. confidence was carried with one dissentient. ■■■••■ - • ■
