TARIFF ALTERATION.
IN THE COMMONWEALTH. By Telerrapli—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. December 1, 1.2 a.m.) Melbourne, November SO. In the Federal House, Mr. Tudor (Minister of Customs) sprung a surprise in presenting a long series of alterations to j the tariff, which operate from to-morrow. Many of tho alterations arc merely verbal, or shift items from ono category to another. British preferenoo is granted in a number of instances, mostly at the expenso of higher duties on foreign goods, and tho few wher* duties were lowered were mostly on articles required for manufacture. In timber, New Zealand white pine for butter boxes is made free, instead of having a general duty of sixpence per hundred superficial feet. Timber generally is not dealt with, but in order not to give Kew Zealand any advantage in the rates except for butterbox purposes, now all are made identical.
