ISbtiSTRT. .The suggestion that the oil industry of New Zealand should be nationalised hiis' emanated from many of the Parliamentary candidates, who appear to have little or no knowledge of the subject.. Mr. Engel. the London representative of the Shell Transport- and Oil Company, who is now in New XeaJand. Dut.s a- different complexion on this subject. To an interviewer he stated that no monopoly could cyist in thr production of oil. Unlike, r.oal and gold, oil could not hp mined iu sma,ll quantities.. Even' if possible, it would not be profitable. Wi.th coal and .pold they epuld tret' a realised value for their output. but it wa.s not so in tlic. rase of oil won. It would never nay small men to operate on n, small Held, because when the oil was produced there would be 110 market- for it. New Zealand, on account or its small populatiou. only provided a limited market, so that the small producer would need to look beyorid the Dominion for purchasers ,'bf his product. Any attempt to start an .export • trade would mean entering into competition with companies of long standing, .who had socnt millions in perfecting their organisation.
