THREE THOUSAND WIIAREOl" IN \ CATCH. The Tvhareou season commenced ycster : day morning, when no fewer than 3000 well-conditioned fish wero netted off the Heads. As each fish woidis'froiu 3 to 41b., tho catch' weighed in the proximitv of 10,0001b. , This huge catch was brought over to Wellington at midday, and (he fish were dejwsited in freezing chambers. The wharemi are unusually early this season, as it is usually, March or April before they make their appearance in tho vicinity of Wellington. Then they arcs in the habit of appearing off the coast near Pnekukiiriki, and gradually working down to Whareou Bay, which is a favourite feeding-ground, and, incidentally, a favoured lishing-gronnd. Afterwards (hoy round Terawhiti to Island Bay and I'alliser Hay. This was the track, of the whareou swarm—they came'in millions in May, 1505. when a record catch was established in Whareou Hay, as many as 11,000 fish being netted in one day.
