MASTERTON NOTES.

At an inquest this afternoon concern, ing the death of John Smith, who was found near Opaki this morning with a bullet-wound' in the stomach, evidence was to tho effect that deceased had suffered from influenza for some time, and had been worrying. He was missed from his home on Thursday, and a scarcli party found his body at half-past four this morning:.. The jury returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane. ■ ~ . At a • private meeting of ' trades- ■ men and others, . convened by circular and held last evening (and to which the press was not invited), tho following resolutions arc reported to havo been carried:—"(l) That those present aro of opinion that NoLicense has proved a failure, and that steps bo taken to have licenses restored in Masterton electorate; (J) in'the event .of rectoration being carried, it will rest entirely with the people themselves how hotels shall Ive conducted: --They have the privilege, of. electing a licensing committee, ami, if that .privilege is judiciously exercised, they surely can rely on the Bench to see.that the Licensing Act is strictly enforced, aud that only, cap-1 able men, or women of the highest character, are permitted to conduct hotels." Mrs. Nellie Costin was charged that, on November .1, at Carterton, she did deliver to one Matthew Adams, residing within the NofLicensc . district of Masterton, a package containing liquor, such package not. having distinctly written. or printed outsido ;thoroof n statement that it cbatained liquor.
