A fow weeks ago ha won a 410 Yards Hurdlo Handicap • from scratch in 61 2-ssoc. |
J. J. Harley (South Sydney Harriers) won the mile walk in 7min. II 4Ssec. At the last Australasian championships in Brisbane he finisho 4 second to Kerr in both walks. Denis Lane (South Sydney Harriers) finished second to E. A. Southee (University A.C.) in th* running broad jump, the latter clearing' 22ft. 7in., and Lane 21ft. llin. Eeillv, the champion at putting the shot and 'brewing the hammer, is unable to come, hence Lane's selection for these events. . P. T. Redmond (South Sydney Harriers) won the. 100 yards in 10 l-ssec., and W. P. Pattinson (University A.C.) was successful in the 410 yards, in 52 2-ssec. Tho emergency, O. H. Scott, does not seem to have been, a competitor, .a,t tho meeting on November 11, but he is one of tho three hold/Kg. tho Australasian high jump record of Bit. The names o f the Queenslanders are' not all familiar, but . the announcement that Dave Smith may be included in the team is interesting. Presumably this is Dave Smith, of Bundaberg, who toured New Zealand as a professional some eight or nine years ago. Ho won a large number of handicap, half-mile, and mile events, and registered a brilliant performance when ne won the mile in train. 25sec. at tho Wanganui Caledonian Society's meeting. He has always been regarded as one of .the best "milcrs" ever seen in Australasia, and is of that class of riuiot, unassuming athletes who do credit to tho sport. That lie has not lost form ho showed on November 11 at Bundaberg, when ho ran a test mile in lmin. -15sec..
Trevor Francis, who will compcto in tho 220, 410, 880 yards, and ono mile, is a nativo of Ipswich, and has not vet left school. He came into prominence at Brisbane on September 2, when the Sydney "Reforeo" had tho following noto of him:—"At a triangular contest between the Grammar Schools of Brisbane, Ipswich, and Toowoomba, Trevor Francis, of Ipswich, ran the tlOyds. in olsee. The officials of the Q.A.A.A. wero in charge, and four watchos agreed Francis streaked out and made his own pace, aud no ono got within 20 yards of him, which makes the time all tho more remarkable Footballer Willcocks was second in ."it l-ssec. Is there any amateur in Australia to-day capable of beating 51sec. ?" On November 11 Francis ran a test quartermile, paced, in 50 l-ssec., and a mile paced, in dmin. 50sec.
