Tho vessel, which wan being handled well by her masl-vr, Captain Watehlin, junr., waa coming alongside very nicely, at a epeed pi from about two and a half to three knots an hour. In order to chcck her rate of speed, Captain Watehlin rang the engine-room, and, then, without the slightest warning, the steamer shot ahead, and struck the wharf. She grazed along the woodwork, and theu sheered over towards the Government steamer Janie Scddon. How the accident happened is not stated, but it is understood that Captain Watehlin rang "Full speed astern." In ooming in contact with tho wharf the Awaroa'a bows were smashed in from' the hawsepipo to waterline. The wharf also suffered damage in two places. On inquiry last evening it was ascertained that the vessel was not making any water. It is probablo that she will be placed on the Patent hlip to-day.

Yesterday the New Zealand Shipping Company s steamer Kaikoura was docked at Port Chalmers for cleaning and painting. She will procccd to tho ISlufT for month™ loading about the end of this Tho steamer Kotuku is due in port tomorrow evening. She is coming from Wcstport with coal. Captain Finch, at one time in command of the fehaw-Savill steamer Gothic, is now in charge of the White Star liner Arabic. Mr. I?.
