THE TARANAKI SHOW.

. OPENING DAY. CATTLE THE STRONG FEATURE. NOTES AND-RESULTS.' (Bj Telegraph—Special Reporter.l . New : Plymouth, November 22. As was to be expected from the centre of the richest dairying -provinces in' the Dominion, cattle formed the feature at the-annual show of the Taranaki Agricultural Society, which opened on the New. Plymouth Ractcourjo to-day. Both pedigree and grado entries in Jerseys, Halsteins, and -Ayrshires are strong, but ■other breeds are not in evidence. Jerseys are the 'strong pedigree suit, no fewer than 67 entries figuring on the .catalogue in this breed, The different breeders are numerous, and include Messrs. AV. V. Harkness, E.'J. and T. -Linn, A. .'A. Ward, C. G cod son, W. J. B. and W. Paton, and J. S. Short. Tho best of the stock was really excellent, but some of the.exhibits were far from this standard. Mr. W. V. Harkness's recently, imported bull got the champion award for t.he male class, and Mr. A. A. Ward's cow "Up-to-Date" was similarly honoured in hor class. Ayrshires are also well represented. The principal breeders who are showing are Messrs. Fred. Mills, F. W., Wilkie, Olsen Bros., and W. Hall. MelsrS. Wilkie and Olsen Bros, divided the champion honours. The Holsteins are' all from the herds of Messrs. .Newton King and. F. J. Johnstone, but the entry is onl.t a moderate one. Mr. Newton King i carried off both championships. . 'Sheep are-not very strong, practically the wnolo of the exhibitors being from New .Plymouth or us vicinity. None of the big outside breeders, have been tempted to enter. Messrs, Fernie Bros, had entered a considerable number, of their flock, but, owing to a'misunderstanding on the railways, the sheep were trucked through to Napier, instead of to New Plymouth. The Lincoln .championships both fell to ilr. F. A. Bremer, and thfc Shropshire championships to' Mr. G. E. Marshall. . Messrs: C. Hoskon and M. H. Kiug shared the English Leicester champion awards. As at the other spring shows, pigs are not much in evidence. The total entries received.for the'show numbered 1100. but on account of the heavy, weather down tho line ft few exhibitors intimated at tho last moment that they had found it impracticable to entrain their. stock. However, the society have an ample margin to' work on, this year's entries exceeding those of last year by 439. The canine exhibits 'are largely responsible for the 'increase, there being 'over 200 more dogs this year than there were at the last show. Altogether it is a well-arranged, compact little show, and,'_giy;Bp fine weather to-morrow in place of tne.. showery weather, of to-day, financial success is assured.
