WELLINGTON CENTRAL
MR. YOUNG AT MITCIIELLTOWN. Mr._ W. T. Yonng, J«ibaur candidate for Wellington-'Central, addressed a large ■meeiiiw of electors in the open nir at Mitchclltowii last night. In the course of his address, Mr. Young mentioned that the Stale Fire Insurance had been the means of considerably reducing the premiums and thereby affecting a great saving to the jiolicy-hoidcr. Notwithstanding this reduction, the State Fire Insurance had turned over a profit of .£1,000,000 during the few years it had been in operation, which lie put forward as a conclusive argument of what could be gained by public undertaking. Jn the matter of defence, he urged that the interests of the two countries being closely associated it was essential that New Zealand should co-operate with Australir in building up an Australian navy tor the protection of our commerce and community. "It is interesting, and certainly amusing, to note," said Mr. Voting, "that the voice of the Government in this electorate asserts that there have been more strikes in Australia since, the advent of the Labour Government in April, 1910, than in the previous fifty-live years of its history. The. statement is one worthy of a second-rate comic opera at the conclusion of the la=t net, when the audience is generally subjected to some brilliant limelight. Had lie been sufficiently interested in the well-being of the mass of the community to study the industrial movement, he would be cognisant of the fact that the official records of Australia entirely -.rid uncompro'uisiugly disprove his assertion. On the contrary, it is 'established beyond question-that the Labour Governments have done .more'to prevent strikes than anv other Government on this side of the .Equator, Kiri'irs are invariably I';e offsprings of a bad eronov.iir sv?t""i. rreulfins from bad lows mad-* by Liberal and Tory, who are now feedin" in the one political padVck of Australia preparing to fight T.aljour at every presentable opportunity." After the eandidat" bad dealt with.other points involved in (he platform of the Labour party, he wa= accorded a unanimous vote of thank" and eonftiVitcc. The 'lV'tville meeting was a''ar.deied owing to the state of the weather. The candidate wiM =p°a v in that'part of the district at a later stage.
