INTERESTING DISCOVERIES. By Tclecraph—Pre3s Association—CoojtieM Sydney, November 21. Mr. Humphrey Berkeley, tho owner of Fanning Island, states that recent excavations disclosed the fact that tho islands were once inhabited by skilled races. Thcro has been unearthed the remains of a large building, 200 ft. by 50ft., in the construction of which no mortar was used. The stones had been morticed together. Near the building was a tomb containing a human skeleton, a necklace, tho teeth of a cachalot, and other articles, including a skull of a poi-eating dog. Mr. Berkeley concludes that tho island was one of tho resting places of tho Polynesians during their numerous migrations in the oldcu days.
