FOR THE HIGH LEVELS.
WATER SUPPLY TURNED ON. An interesting little function took place yesterday afternoon at the uewly-erecteil municipal water-pumping station at llay Street (Oriental Bay), when the Mayor, in Hie presence of several of the city councillors, officers of the City Corporation, and residents of Oriental Bay, lioseneath, and tho vicinity officially turned on the wator-supply which reticulates the high levels in that neighbourhood. Before turning on tho supply, the Mayor made a short speech, in which he felicitated the rasidonls of lioseneath, Oriental Bay. and the highor levels upon the materialisation of their hopes. ■ The rotary pump installation (by Lawrence and Hanson, of Sydney, Melbourne and Wellington), was 61 horse-power, and had a lifting capacity of 350 ft., tho flow being at the rale of 400 gallons per minute. From now on, said his Worship, residents of the locality might slumber undisturbed by the possibility of baring to fight fin outbreak of fire at. night without an adequate water-supply. Tho Mayor then switched on the current and the hum of tho motor filled the room. Mr. T. W. Ward, chairman of the Eoseneath and Oriental Bay Ratepayers' Association then handed his Worship a miniature turn-cock key, as a souvenir of the occasion. In responding Mr. Wilfonl acknowledged the value of tho services rendered to the general welfare of tho civic body by tho various ratepayers' associations, which ho said were deserving of very support. At the. conclusion of the ceremony at tho pumping station, the valve pipes at tho reservoir were oponed and the supply for tho high levels flowed into the mains.
