PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITURE.
MAY AND M. MOOKJG'S ARTISTIC WORK. An exhibition of i>hotngraphs from (he studios of May and M.'■ Moore, of Wellington and Sydney," was opened at il'Grogor Wright's studio. ] ; auibl.o)i Quay, yesterday morning. The display, which includes some highly artistic work,' is a splendid example of tlio 'advance which has been made in photographic portraiture of recent years. The charm of the Moore photographs is that while preserving ;i faithful likeness, with none of the retouched out ol existence, something more than ' a ■ more photograph is presented. This is the result of-excellent toning, and an accurate knowledge of lighting effects. .So adroitly do modern papers lend themselves to the soft merging of the high and low lights that an artistic portrait rather thaii » machine-made likeness is tho result. Onr only has to glance at the collection, tco, io note that the Misses Moore are adepts in Ihe delicate art of posture—they have bright ideas, and aro not afraid to depart, from the conventional to give expression lo them. Among the many, one would single out as strikingly good portraits is the impression of Mr. Gaston Mervale as Svcngalis, Mr. I). A. Kenny at tho piano, Mr. G. Butler, Air. E. J. Hill, Mr. Horace Hunt (composing a nocturne), Mr. Frank Grady, sen., "Hop," of tho " Bulletin,' a number of wellknown people from stagelaml, and many chnrniing child studies. The exhibition is well worth inspection. -
