THE DEAL IN ISLANDS.
IMPORTANCE DISCOUNTED. By Telceraph-Presa Aesoclation-Oopyrlcht Sydney, November 17. Mr. Millward, manager of the Pacific Cablo Board, referring to the cable reporting that a British-Canadian syndicate had purchased Fanning and Washington Islands, explains that evidently this means that a syndicate has acquired estates co-extensive with the area of the islands, but that that cannot bo the caso with regard to Fanning Island, whero the Pacific Cablo Board has secured a plot for a landing station which is vested in thorn for. fifty years.
Such acquisition as reported would not alter the nationality of the islands, and Mr. Millward thcreforo fails to see the international significance of the purchase.
