BREEDING EWES DECREASING.
' s 'FALLING-OFF OF 190,917. The number of breeding ewes returned as on April 30 as per the sheep returns ; was 12,3-2-1,103, as against 12,575,380 for the previous return, a decrease of 190,917. The wethers on hand on April 30 fehowed an incieaso of 175,199, but there were 331,032 fewer of last season's lambs . on that date than there were the year before. The return's showing the numbers of the different lireeds of sheep in the Dominion again -prove that the flock merino is a diminishing quantity, only 1,319,339 being returned as against 1,932,063 for the previous year. The Honiney Marsh heads the list as the largest of. the.puro. breeds among stud sheep, the total being 256,015. ■Lincolns hold second place, but with only 100,303, a falling away of over 11,000 in twelve month?, English and Border Leicesters have also gone back, and the same applies to Shropshires. Soiithdowns, Merinos, and other breeds have shown increases in this direction.
