On Monday ho is to lay the foundation stone of Departmental buildings at Glirislchurch. The Hon. D. Buddo is at lUngiora, Sir James Carroll at Gisborne, Sir John Findlay at Auckland, the Hon. R, Mivenzie at Collingwood, the Hon. T. Mackenzie at Eltham, and the Hon. A. T. Ngala at Port Awniwi. The Hon. J. A. Millar is now at Dunedin. He is expected to arrive. back in Wellington on Friday morning. Mr. Alfred Tennyson Dickena, of Melbourne, the eldest surviving son of tho novelist, is now appearing in America as a lecturer on his lather's works, under J. and N. Tail's management. Mr. Dickens commenced his tour in Boston, at the beginning of October, and is being overwhelmed with invitations to dinners and receptions given by America's prominent citizens, including the U.S. President. Mr. Tnft, by tho way, is a {jrcat Dickens enthusiast, and lately invited Mr. Dickens to tho Whito House for what was described as "an informal chat." Feil ding's oldest settler, Mr. Richard Bowler, passed away yosterdav morning at the ■ age of 91 years. Our Feilding correspondent states that Mr. Bowler was tho third person to eettle on tho Manchester block in the early 'seventies, and ho has resided in Feilding ever since. He leaves a family of six. These aro Mrs. J. Cummings (Makino), Mrs. W. Wenham (Feildiug), Mrs. S. Burdett (Melbourne), Sirs. C. Gnthrio (Foilding), Mrs. W. Pawson (Daunevirke), and Mr. A. Bowler (FeiJding). Mr. Mdughnn Barnctt, City Organist, has been granted !we of absence by the City Council in order to attend tho official opening of the Auckland Town Hall organ.

Mr. H. J. 11. Blow, who is at present travelling in the north on Departmental business, is expected to return to Wellington about Thursday next. Mr. P. B. Bolt, of the local Government Insurance Office, who has been appointed manager of the Dunedin branch of that Department, was tendered a farewell at tho Commercial Travellers' Club last ovtoiin;;. The president, Mr. IT. C. Tcwsley, said that Mr. Bolt had been one of their most valued members, and they all wished him every success in his new position. Mr. J. Lomns, Secretary for Labour, is at Auckland on a Departmental visit. His Excellency tho Governor has been pleased to approve of tho award of the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration to Lieut-Colonel David, filh (Manawalu) Mounted Riiles. Mr. Henari Poananga, of Wellington, has boon appointed to act as a licensed Nativo interpreter of tho first grade. Lieutenant J. F. ltockstraw, Into of tho active unattached list, retires, as from October 5, with tie honorary rank of captain.
