COUNTERBLAST ON BOXING. Tho Sports Protection League has found on outlet right early for its latent energies, in combating tho recent movement to have professional boxing in tho Town Hall forbidden by the City Council. As n result of a deputation "which waited upon the council a fortnight ago, Mr. A. 8.. Atkinson tabled a uotico of motion to tho effect that no permits bo granted iii future for the Town Hall for professional boxing shows. Members of tho Sports' Protection League propose to wait upon tho council to-night to slate a case in favour of boxing in tho Town Mali or anywhere else, and, in order to strengthen their ease, they have obtained information ns to the practice iu other New .Zealand towns where there are municipally-owned halls. To this end the secret ary' has been in communication with other municipal bodies controlling halls in which basing contests have been held.

The secretary put the following quo-stions:—(l) Have the contests been carried out in a satisfactory manner? (2) Has your council ever received any complaint with regard !o nnv boxing contest held in your buildings'? The replies received from the town clerks of Invorcargill, Valmorslon North, Wangnnui, and Hlonboim, were all to llm effort" that boxing contests lield in thwr theatres had always been -uitisfaclorily carried out, and that on no occasion had any complaint ever been mudo as to their be-ins conducted' badly. Inspector Ellison, in control of the Wellington police, was also asked to roplv to the same questions. His reply was as follows:—

"I desire to say that all boxing exhibitions held in the Town IToil have been carried out in a satisfactory manner, and strictly in accordance with the law. Had there boon nnv abuse of tho regulations or misconduct 1 should have interfered at once."
