MASTERTON NOTES.
A SIGNIFICANT LETTER. (From Our Hneclal Correspondent.) Masterton, November 13. _TJia funeral of tho late Mr. C. F. Gawith, solicitor, look placo this afternoon. It tt-i>.s one of the largest ever seen in the district.
The following significant communication from tho Under-Secretary of Public Works was at too meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday:— "Referring to the offers of expenditure- of votes for road works, etc., which were made to your council on October Ifi, as there appears to be a slight misapprehension on the part of some local bodies in regard to tho items where the amount otfered is on account of a larger sum, 1 have to inform you that in all such cases the larger sum mentioned is available for expenditure. Thus: whore a vote of ,£2.10 is provided on account of, say, .ClOOfl, the .Minister will be prepared to authorise up to .£IOOO so soon as satisfactory proposals are submitted. Tho reason for allocating the smaller amount is that, generally speaking, it is not anticipated I hat more than that sum will come to charge beforo March 31 next. If, however, local bodies are in a position to carry out, and claim for, work to the extent of the larger amount before March 31 next, such claims will bo duly met."
Quito a number of read-metalling and other contracts are about to be let bv the Masterton County Council. These should furnish employment W p <">i■■' '• number of men duriny th» summer months.
Shearing has been delayed somewhat bv the frequent downpours of rain which have occurred during the last week or two. Thunderstorms have been of almost daily occurrence.
The third concert of the season ; r> win. nection with the Mastoiton Orchestral Society is to be held on .\ovemU-r ... Tho first practice of the life-saving class in connection with tho Masterton Y.M.C.A. was held last evening, and was well attended.
Messrs. D. J. Cameron and M. J. H. Jackson are to bo recommended to tho Masterton County Council for appointment to the two vacant seats on tho Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.
The WairaTapa Friendly Societies have decided to hold their annual picnic tit Pigeon Bush on Boxing Day. £t*>rinl trains are being arranged from Masterton.
