Tlie Wanganni show, which begins on Wednesday, is tho event of tho year' as far" : as country people aTO ' concerned, - nnd everything points .to a l'coorc! gathering. For tlie past fortnight n"large"Staff-lias been engaged preparing for the, big carnival. The several dividing railings between tlie course proper and the 1 and Xo. 2 tracks have been removed, and a spaoions judging ring arranged rijht in _ front of . the grandstand. The jumps for the himters and leaping*; competitions, and .pony jump'ing have been'erected in front of the grandstand, so that thoso who like this part of the show can sco every item to advantage. There has been a good deal of extra work in erecting a large' number of cattle and sheep pens, tlie pens which sniEerd last year being inadequate to accoinmodatei- the extra mimbsr of entries roceivo.d this year. .Again, there are the shearing pens and lx>ard for the shearing competition for boys under 21 years of age. Mr. Campbell's £S> ss. prize is expected to be keenly oompstcd for. Post entries will be •received up to noon on Medcesday for this' competition, and also lor another, competition that should commend itself to farmers' sons, viz., wool-classing. The dog division, which is run under the auspices of 'the' Waiiganui Kennel Club, is usually one of the chief features of the show. This year the AV.K.C. are aiming at making the show a rcoard one. There are no fewer than -100 different classes, and in every bread there are valuable special prizes, beside; the usual Kennel Club prize list. There are challenge classes for bulldogs, English setters, Irish setters, Gordon setters, pointers, pugs black and pugs fawn. Amongst the valuable cups and trophies offered is Messrs. Sprntt's Patent, Ltd., solid silver cup for the be?t cocker spaniel in the show, e.r.d the Ejmont-Wanganui Hunt's solid silver challenge cup to the huntsman who gains .the greatest of •points in harrier classes. The 'W.K.C. gives silver medals in all challenge classes. The New Zealand Fox Terrier Club give a trophy value f £3. 10=. for the best fox terrier in the show, whilst the Irish Terrier Club offer four valuable trophies for competition in the Irish terrier classes. The club have been fortunate in obtaining the services of Jfr. If. 11. Shephprd to jndsre Scotch terriers, whilst Mr. Finney will jndge bulldogs. Mr, Lester Kay will preside ill the ring ever spaniels, terriers, hounds, and harriers. and Mr. I'aul Hunter will jud.go in all other breeds, including collies, setters, pointers, etc. Tho side-shows will l:e greatly in evidence, space having been portioned off to quite a host of showmen.
GENERAL FARMING NEWS. Four Lincoln rams from the well-known "Penrose" (lock of Mr. William Perry, of Masterton, have, it is state,d, been purchased by a Xoiv South Wales breeder, and will be shipped to Sydr.py this week. Mr. Thes. Luxtou, of Waitara, has sold a purebred yearling Jersey bnll, by Campanile's Sultau— Grannie's Girl, to ths Government for XOO.sus. The bull was offered at the auction sale of Mr. Jjuxton's the other day. and was passed in. The "Taramki News" says that there were oisht Jsrsey men anxious to secure the bull, but 'the representative of the Government "got in first." The representative in London of the producers' Association (Mr. Shelton) has not, so far, according to latest advices, received any definite information from the Port of Loudon authority as to when the proposed improvements in the West India docks will lie made. • Referring to (he dairy cattle exhibited at the Canterbury show, Mr. J. B. Charlton, M.R.'C.V.S., stated, says the "Press," that there were several cows amongst, the exhibits which born (races of having been milked for a considerable time. An opinion is expressed that this is a cruelly that should be guarded against on future occasions. The southern complaint ean be applied to several of tho 'North Island shows. ■' Mr. A. .T. Gallichan, of Tiakitahuna, lias been appointed judge of the Holsteinl'riesian cattle at tho Southland show, which is to be held al Invercargill ou December 12 and 13. The recent cold snap was, according toa southern paper, responsible for the death of several hundred newly-born lambs on the Cnlverden farms and Amuri stations. One (lockowner is stated to have lost iiOO, another 300, and there were several losses of from 50 to 100 amongst the smaller (locks. MASTERTOiN A. & P. ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the General Committee of the Masterton A. and P. Percy, W. J. Wclc'h, K. Rayner, W. Cooper, \V. Perry, J. P. Perry. G. C. Summerill, I'. Vallance, D. J. Foreman, E. C. Harper, and D. Caselberg. The appointment of a sub-comnuttce to visit Wellington on n canvassing tour wanleft with Messrs. G. C. Summerill and and D. Caselberg. It was suggested that the visit be made on Wednesday. A letter was read from the secretary of the New Zealand liomney Mni'Mi Sheep-breeders' Association, giving the results of the conference held at I'almer;.ton North between the joint committees of ihc two n.-NOci;!fioit.s, on Hie question of ho|ding a Romiiey ram sale, under the auspices''of tlio liomney Harsh Association nt Ma.sterton. The committee decided upon the fee for entries, and tlr.it half should go to each association. .The time limit was lo be the same as fixed bv the Masterbn Assoeiation. Entries would be received at Feihling, and close fourteen days before the sale, wliieh it was suggested should take plaeo on the afternoon of the first day of the fair, li wa.-. proposed that the Masterton Assoeiation set up a sub-eommittoe of two, t.i act with Messrs. K. Gray and ,1. E. Hewitt, a,-, stewards on the day of the sale. Three prizes would Ik l given for two-tooths, aiui three for four-tooths. The liomney Association would appoint its own Judges. The report was adopted, and Messrs, W. Terry, W. D. Watson and I?. Cooper were appointed lo represent the Masicrton Association as stewards. The New Zealand Homnev Breeders' Association intimated that prir.es of .I'j, and .€2 were being offered for the best peii of fine flock Homney rams entered in the Flock Book of New Zealand. It was decided to communicate with the Breeders' Association, and ask for further particulars. Mr. J. M. Johnston, of Palmerston ?sorth, stated that an effort was being made to arrange for a deputation to Ministers, but he was afraid that it was almost impossible at this stage, to secure an interview. The secretary of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce advised that Mr. (,'. E. Daniel), rice-president of the Chamber, had been appointed its representative on the deputation to Hie Minister-for .Railways regarding the name of. the .Kiiripuni Railway Station. 3fr. I). Bennett, of Longdate, wrote asking whether students were to accompany the judges of stock at the next Masterton Show, or not; alto whether.positions were to be balloted for.
