Advices to hand give an account of how the fire on board the New Zealand Ship* ping Co.'s new steamer Hurunui occurred. The vessel was launched at Port Glasgow on September 25, ami her dimensions are:-' Length, 495 ft.; breadth, 62ft. 9in.; depth moulded, 43ft. 3in. and dead-weight parrying capacity, about 90C0 tons. Insulating machinery for the carriage of frozen anil general cargo purposes has been fitted, ami it was in the part of the vessel that, on September 27, a tire broke out, causing damage estimated at over .£3CCO. After the launch on Monday, the Humui.ii was towed to Glasgow to be engincd by Messrs. D. Rowan and Company, and early on Wednesday morning a serious outbreak o[ lire was discovered as was lying at Finneston Quay. It was found between 2 and 3 a.m. situated on the forehold, which is being fitted out for wld chambers for the frozen meat trade. Running round the hold was a scaffolding for the workmen, who had been engaged lining the sides with wood uhar and cottou waste, materials used for insulating purposes. In the hold were a largo number of bags of wood »char, packing waste, and a ooneidcrablc auantity of loose Uui<.

ber.'' By the -time tho fire brigade were on tlie scene, smoke in dense volumes was rising from the hold, and owiug to the difficulty in reaching the seat of tlic lire the task of. subduing the outbreak occupied -the firemen several hours. Ultimately five lines of hose were led through a man-hole between docks, and the fire wa« gradually checked. The timber and packing material .were -all destroyed, however, and in addition the vessol sustained damago through a number of plates buckling under the interna heat. Four hours elapsed before the fire was mastered. Difficulty of access- and the volumes of smoke within the chamber made the t-ayk of the firemen very hard.
