notes and comments,
(Bt Glen-cob.]
The well-known Sydney agent, Mr. H. Chisholm, was operating at the Elderslie sl j' o M yearlings yesterday, and, amongst other lots, he purchased, for 400 guineas, the half-brother (by Charlemagne II) to Danube. At the same sale, the local sportsman who races as "Mr. EUerton" purchased a colt by the imported sire from an unnamed mare by Stepniak from Rosella. Mr. J. W. Abbott, owner of Gipsy Belle, secured a half, brother (by Vasco) to that rnare tor 100 guineas. This is a goodlooking, well-grown youngster. He goes into the Porirua stable. The Awapuni sportsman, Mr. Goring Johnston, purchased three yearlings at the Elderslie sale yesterday. Along with the Martian youngster, purchased on Tuesday, they will bo brought to Paluiorston North next week. The Porirua trainer, J. H. Prosser, purchased a Charlemagne II filly at the same sale, but it is understood that ho v.as acting for another. The judges appointed by the Racing Conference (Sir George Clifford, and Messrs. P. A. Miller and T. W. Stringer, K.C.) to hear the appeal of A. Julian against his disqualification by the Wanganui Metropolitan Club, sat yesterday aiternoon, and, alter hearing evidence, reserved decision till 11 o'clock this morning. Mr. Archibald, who went south to conduct the case for Julian, returns to Hastings by the Napier express to-day.' It is not generally known that an offer of 1000 guineas was refused recently for Madam Madcap. The oiler was mailo on behalf of Mr. "Sol." Green, the ShipleyStud master, and it is understood that had money been able to purchase Sir George Clilford's maro Mr. Green was prepared to go further than tho figure quoted. As both Los Angeles and Vice-Admiral have made tho final payment for tho Stead Gold Cup, it appears as if the Messrs, Stead will start both horses tomorrow. Sir George Clifford is aiso represented by two horses, but, probably, he will rely on Madam Madcap, as Counterfeit is also engaged in the Fcndalton Handicap. Hawick has been suffering from a cold during the week, but it is stated that he is improving, and will'bo a runner at Riccarton to-morrow. He will be ridden by L. Hill, who lias made a grand recovery from tho accident which befell him at Trentham. Effort seems to he coming on with every race. In the Members' Handicap to-morrow she is to be ridden by W. Young, in place of W. Holmes. Equitas (9st. 91b.) is likely to start favourite in the raco mentioned. It is interesting to note that tho C.J.C. handicapper, Air. J. E. Henrys, assesses Labour Day as the equal of Counterfeit over one mile and a quarter. Tho only occasion on which the pair met was in the Wang.'inui Guineas, when Counterfeit won, and the other filly was unplaced. Since then, tlio Waverley filly has shown good form, and her meeting with Counterfeit will bo full of interest. She is to have the services of B. Dceley, while F. E. Jones will steer the Chokebore representative.
