INTERESTING ELECTION.
A GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE BADLY BEATEN. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! Hastings, November 9. The county elections were held yesterday, when Mr. T. E. Cross was elected for the Heretaunga Hiding, Mr. G. A. Mac Donald for Meeanoe, Mr. T. Clark for Pelaue, and Mr. H. A. Russell for Puketapu. Tho chief interest was centred in the Heretaunga Riding, in which Mr. 11. Lan Simson opposed Mr. T. Cross. Mr. Simson, who is the Government candidate for the Hawke's Bay seat, made the contest largely a test of his personal popularity with the electors, lie publicly denounced his opponent in very strong terms, and issued a challenge for Mr. Cross to meet him on the public platform in connection with a certain action taken by Mr. Cross whilst a member of the County Council. The pair met fact to face on Tuesday night at Mahora, and a most stonily meeting eventuated. The polling next day provided disastrous results for Mr. Simeon's supporters, tho voting being:—Cross, 373; Simson. 170.
