Tho sale of tha wrecked steamer Knight of St. George, which piled up on tho reef off Nukalofa, Tonga, last August through being driven out of her course by ocean currents, produced a little excitement iu the Tongan capital last month. The auction of the vessel, which had on board, among other cargo, a million feet of. Oregon timber, drew an Interested crowd of prospective bidders and curious onlookers. Before tho disposal of tho hull and main contents, about thirty odd lots, including several of tho Etoamer's boats, were knocked down, the lifcboat-s fetching £6 6s. and £6 15s. respectively, while the gig (a. newer boat) realised £19. The sale of the vessel herself started at £IM, and from £150 crept up in fives to £205, at which price she became the property of a Tongan syndicate, for whom Jlr J. Cowley arrived in Auckland on Saturday to purchase plant lor salvaging operations. Should the weather hold good there will bo. a handsome profit in the venture, as the cargo of timber alone irworth a great deal moro than the price given.
