Of theso St. Vinoent's B, Trinity Young Jlwi's Institute, and tho Victoria Collego teams were recalled to appear in tho evening. IMPROMPTU DEBATE. Jiosult—Victoria. Collego team (Messrs. D. S. Smith and A. l'Vir), ]; Trinity Young Men's Institute, Clreymouth (Messrs. J. Hogben and H. L. !'. 'Smith)' and St. Vincent's Catholic Club (Messrs. Casey and M'Govcrn), crjital, 2. In declaring the result, Mr. Baeyertz said that in this class those taking the uHirmativo in tho ovcniiiK dehale (on tin; question "Are Women More Intelligent than Men?") had rather tho easier task, though it did not always appear so. The prize-winners were the more evenly balanced pair, and were the more polished speakers. Their arguments were not always cogent. They could have said, tor example, that women have never produced a great composer, poetess, or painter, as had men in Wagner, Moza.rt:, and other great men. Also it could have been f|iioted what women had been accustom id to do, such as cooking and dressmakir/;. yet if they wanted tho best cooking or dressmaking they had to get men to tlo it. The other two teams—St. Vincent's and Trinity —he would bracket as erjual. HUMOKOI : S QUARTET. Thero were only two competitors for the humorous quartet. He awarded first prize to tho "Lvric Tour" (who sang "James's Vegetable Compound"). Air. Blanford's party came second, with tile quartet "0 Black Her Eye." FLUTE SOLO, There was only one entry for tho flute solo contcst—Miss Simpson, of Wellington, who played last evening. 111 making his nightly unnounocnenl, .Mr. Harold Gregson stated that there had been a record entry l'or tho flute solo contest—one. That was, perhaps, owing to the. difiiculty of tho piece set for performance. He had been asked to award 4 first, sccond, or third prize as he thought lit. He had awarded Miss Simpson a first prize with U.'l marks. (Applause.) Thero was a slight fault in phrasing here and there, but her tono and execution were very good. It was distinctly a line performance. As that would be tho last announcement lie would have to make lie would like lo say how much he had enjoyed the experience, lie had tried to do his <!yty to competitors and to himself. (Applause.) THE EVENING PERFORMANCE. CIIURCn CHOIR CONTEST. The big Town Hall was filled last evening, when a varied programme was pre-sented,-which ranged frqm a humorous impromptu debate 011 tho subject—"Are Women Moro Intelligent than Mcnf" to anthems sung by church choirs. Tho chief attraction was unquestionably the grand church choir contest, for prizes valued at «C2j and JCIO, and tho handsomo challei'.go shield presented by Messrs. Begg and Co., of Wellington and Dunedin. '1 ho choirs wero set the onerous task of singing threo classes of choral music, viz.—(a) the anthem, "Thanks Be to God," from "Elijah"; (b) hymn, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save"; awl (e) the "Soldiers' Chorus," from "Faust" (Gounod). Three choirs faced the judge —tho Berliampove Baptist Choir 1 (under Mr. G. Hill), the St. Alary of tho Angels' Choir (under Air. E. lleal.v), aud the Courtenav Flaco Congregational Choir (under Air. A. Af. Lewis). The Bcrhampore Choir is not a largo body. Undar Mr, Hill's vigorously-manipulated baton it showed Rood control, but its quality was rather. coarse, and tho sopranos dominated throughout, not that thc-y were too strong, but the male voices were 011 tho weak side. This was particularly noticeable in tho "Soldiers' Chorus" from "Faust," where tho masculine voices should lead. They sang tho hymn very nicely, but were overweighted in tho an them. The St. Mary of tho Angels Choir was numerically and vocally the strongest, and best choir of last evening. It is a well-balanced body, produces a full ringing tone, and was admirably conducted by Air. Mealy. Its power, vocal qualitv, and tho fuio oll'ects of light and sliauo produced placed it an casv first in all threo numbers. It sang (no ".Soldiers' Chorus" with great spirit and tonal quality, and was just a triile llat on tho final chord. The anthem was sung with admirable breadth ond dignity, and tiir, hymn was very beautifully sung. It wan tho only choir which took one of the verses of the old hymn in unison-a very good effect being obtained thereby. The Courtenay Place Choir is not a strong body numerically, and was obviously overweighted in both tho anthem and the "Faust" number. On tho other hand, Dr. Dykes's hymn was very nicely intoned. Atrs. Montague acted as accompanist. This evening tho Green Island Choir (Dunedin) and the Grafton Road Alethodist Choir (Auckland) will try conclusions. Tho impromptu debate did not produce any special brilliance 011 tho part ol' those concerned, but there was plenty of food for laughter in tho arguments used by the defenders and assailants ot women's intellectual superiority over mere man. The humorous quartets sung by the "Lyric Four" aud Air. F. V. Blamlford's parly caused a flicker of amusement, and Miss Simpson's flute solo was much appreciated. Air. Baeycrtz announced that this evening there will be in addition to the choir contcst (continued) a grand drawing-room entertainment. Sides had been picked from all the winners of the various vocal and elocutionary competitions, and the audience would act as judge. There would also be tho open quartet ("Sweet and Low") continued from Monday night. Tho box plan is rapidly filling up for the two demonstration nights on Thursday and Friday. Air. Baevertz will attend at tho Concert Chamber between noon and 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to-day, to meet competitors in the elocutionary sections, whom ho desired to help as far as lay in his power. lie will meet vocal competitors at the same time in the Concert Chamber 011 Friday.
