DEMAND ON DEEP-SEA SHIPS.

BY CARGO WORKERS. The Waterside Workers' Union havo mado demands on the deep-sea shipping companies for an increase «1 ratos payable to incu employed in handling cargo in freezing chambers on steamers from Is. Gd. to L's. per liour, and tho overtime rates from 2s. Gd. to 3s. Increases from the present rates of Is. 3d. and 2s. to Is. fid. and 2s. Gd arc asked for men handling frozen cargo at tho ship's side, in trucks, or in cool chambers. The rates applied for are those ruling in Auckland. At present men sent on steamers to work frozen cargo at ports liko Wangaliui and Wnitarn avo paid 10s. per day and found from the time the steamer leaves Wellington until she returns, even though thero aro days on which no work is done. No payment is mado for Sundays. Now Ihe union asks payment at the rate of 12s. per day, and for Sundays as for other days. lu connection with the resignation of the president (llr. Curtice), vice-president (Sir. King), and the secretary (Mr. T. Smith), the union held a meeting last evening, at which tho resignations were accepted, and nominations wore received for tho purposo of filling the vacancies. • A long discussion ensued on tlio position, and tho meeting was adjourned until Tuesday evening next.
