FROM OXFORD TO ABERDEEN

4 EEGIUS PEOFESSOK OP HUMANITY. Professor Alexander Souter, of Mansfield College, has been appointed by the Crown to succeed Professor Sir "U'. M. Ram.-ay as liegius Professor of Humanity at Aberdeen. Aberdeen's gain (writes the Ojf-"'d correspondent of the "Christian Uorhl ) is Oxford's loss. Immediately Dr. Souter arrived in Oxford eight vears ago it was recognised that a scholar of tlio first order had been added to the Mansfield staff. AVhilst his renown had been so far won in Latin and Palaeography, as a devoted admirer and pupil of Sir W. M. Kamray, it was certain that tho new professor would come to the lates Chair of New Testament predisposed to Greek Te=lament studies, and prepared to tako up Biblical research with genuine enthusiasm. The resident scholars of Oxford gave Dr. Souter a warmwclc.mic —not least Canon Sanday, who saw how strongly his own special department was thereby reinforced. It was not long before we heard tliat that most learned and illustrious body, the Delegates of the University Prc.ss, had chosen tho Man«field Professor as editor of their proposed standard edition of the Greek New Testament, with a new critical apparatus. This was to be a supplementary and companion volume to the long MH-ips of "Oxford Classical Texts" which had been coming out for many years. In due course Dr. Souter performed this most important task, and the Press printed an immense edition of his New Testament, which is likely to be used in schools and colleges for many years to come. Dr. Souter has lectured as a deputy professor for Canon Sanday, and lias more recently given a special course under the auspices of tlic Common University Fund. At Mam-field he will especially hc.misrod. He has many friends and pupils now serving the Free Churches as ministers. Whilst at Man-field he may also claim to have revived the lost art of "walking." "Dr. Souter's walks" have, been famous, and'few Oxonians possess his knowledge of the whole district round Oxford and far beyond our immediate surroundings. The Professor will occupv the ollieial residence just vac-nled bv Sir AV. M. Hnmsav, who has moved to Edinburgh.
