RACE FOR THE DERBY. < ' MASTERPIECE AND MISCOUNT. A GREATSTRUGGLE. Cliy Telegraph—Special Rororter.l Christchurch, November 6. The Canterbury Club's meeting was jdvauced a further stage to-day in fine but cold pcather. A keen wind blew sariy, hut, as tho day advanced, a warm
sun shono brightly. His Excellency tho Governor and party were present. Big fields were again tho order of the day, and backers of favourites fared badly. Hawick (U : . Young) was a very warm favourite in tho Mkidleton Hurdles, but, after making the running to tho homo turn, he stopped bndly, finishing last. St. Aidan, who jumped all his fences well, except tho first one, was handy throughout, and, in tho run from tho last fenco, ho won comfortably. Tjrapnic made a good showing to tho last fence, where ho was done with.' Espartero finished very strongjy, but ho made a couple of faulty jumps,. and spoilt, any chanco which he had of beating St. Aidan. Gaelic showed up well at the finish. After the race \V. Young was before tho stewards, and was fined £5 for crossing his field too soon. Jiliss made amends for her Stewards' Handicap defeat by romping homo in tho Criterion Handicap. Mr. Hunter's mare got -woll out, and, having tho track to herself, she showed her best form. Formby ran well for about five furlongs, and Electrakoff for six. Nyland easily beat all but the winner at the finish. Effort stayed on well, and is coming back to form. Longstep was left at the post, and took no part in the race. A big field of two-year-olds contested [ the Irwcil Handicap, and, after a fast race, Ermengardo won by a couple of lengths. Glade and Bon Ton wore her nenrest attendants at the turn for home. The latter, staying best, beat Glado by a length. Star Danco and Anna Carlovna wore next, just in advance of tho Chokebore pair—Scottish Star and Glenfinnan. The winner is now moro seasoned than the other juveniles. It is improbable that sho will be raccd again at the meeting. ft is more likely that she will be givan a short spell, ana then be freshened up for the Ellerslie gathering at Christmas. The Chokcbore bracket (Masterpieco and Counterfeit) and Miscount were the best backed in the Derby, Which was a fine race throughout. At tho finish necks only separated the trio named. The start was a porfcct one. Miscount was the .quickest to find his feet u and led past Cntts's, with Byron fighting Jiard for his head, and Royal Scotch next; Down the back Byron led,, but there was a scrimmage, and Byron got knocked back to last. The Chokebore pair then led, and, at tho turn, Counterfeit was clear of Masterpiece, with Royal Scotch and Miscount following. Miscount had to come wide, and was two lengths behind. At the dis--tin(%3 Masterpiece disposed, of Counterfeit, and then had to withstand a solid challenge from Miscount, who was under the whip. This, however, was soon discarded, and tho Birkenhead colt did better. Slowly he crept up on the big colt's girths, but tho post was now in sight. The crowd roared applause, and the two colts strained every nerve. Masterpieco was now under the stick, and, without a flinch, he strugon. Vast the lino they went, and •Masterpiece had won by a neck. It was a great race—ono of tho finest Derbies ever seen, and tho verdict went to a good horse with an equally good, but unlucky, one in second place. After the race, Sir George Clifford led the winner on to . tho lawn, where ho was decorated by Lady Islington. Culprit was lavourite in tho Juvenile Plate, her owners making no secret of the fact that they oxpected her to win. Autumnus, however, • brought off a surprise, and, jumping out clear of Jlr. Stead's filly, he never let her up, winning with ridiculous case by three lengths, in the fast time of lmin. lscc. Beldame was just clear of Taffeta, with Rangiatua following fast. The winner was well supported by followers of the kluo and goul chequers, who were aware of some bad luck which the colt had experienced in the "SYelcorao Stakes on Saturday. He is a very solid, well-grown colt, and is sure to do well. . Los Angles, who has been purchased by Messrs. Stead Bros., with a view of winning tho Gold Cup on Saturday, wm withdrawn from the Metropolitan. Handicap, the stablo relying ,on yico-Admiral, who looked, if possible, a better horse than on tho first day. It was.a pretty race, the field being bunched the whole way. From a good start Mernvoma led from Mendip and Dominic. This was tho ordor tiir'tnc bottom of the course was reachcd. There Vice-Admiral, who got a lucky run on tho rails, came through, nnd in; .a twinkling rsn to the f r <[nt. Domino came very Fast at the finish, but could not reach Vice-Admiral, who won easily. --Labour Day* ran'well throughout, but covered a lot of ground. Acting as pacemaker did not suit Mendip, who alwavs runs better behind, but to-day Hatch was unablo to steady him. Goldfinder was never prominent, and was last to finish. ... A "boil-over" was non-owly aveTted in the Epsom High Weight event, when Fisticuff was only bfaten by tho narrowest of margins in the Inst stride. Tho bi/j field was too much for backers, and speculation was crippled. At the- start llio colours of Dearest and Turbine were prominent, but Fisticuff was the first into the straight, and appeared to be T.ixining when Morecambe camo from the nick, and after a very exciting finish won by a nose. . The favourite, Patriotic, defeated a good field in tho finnl event. Goldemar and Outward were first into tho straight, but Patriotic was always handy, and won easily at tho finish. The little-fancied Orafcava was second, and his supporters received a big dividend.
