FOR MAJOR DONALD.

-o PROPOSED PRESENT. CIRCULAR OUT FOE FUNDS. In connection with tlio approaching departure for England, for a courso of training in Iho Imperial Army, of Major T. W. M'Donald, Connnaiulant of tlu Junior Cadets, the following circular letter has been addressed to the officers commanding tlio New Zealand juuinr cadet battalions by Lieutenant A. y- C. Stevens, stall officer to Major Jl Donald, acting for a committee of members of the Jnuior Codct Department at Headquarters, Wellington:— "Presentation to Major M'Donald on his departure to England for military purposes. "Dear sir,— "Mnjor T. W. M'Donald, Commandant of Junior Cadets, 16 proceeding, at tho end of the current month, to England for one year's regimental training. It has been decided, therefore, by a committee of members of tlio Junior Cadet Department in "Wellington, to mark the occasion of his departure in somo suitable way. My committee feels that, perhaps, junior cadet officers would like to give some tangible expression of their approval of Major M/Donald's work on behalf of the youth of New Zealand before ho severs his connection with the Department. It is, therefore, proposed to asl; junior cadet battalion commanders to circularise the officers under their command, asking them to contribute, if eo disposed, whatever they feel they caii afford, the amount so realised by battalion commanders to be then forwarded to Mr. H. B. Jacobs, the lion, treasurer, care of Box 830, G.P.0., Wellington. It is hoped, if tlio response to this appeal is generously met, to purchase a really gosd pair of military field glasses which will bo of the greatest vahio to Major M'Donald in his work in tho field in England, and if there is any surplus lel't over to buy a fitted suit case or seme other suitable article. The presentation, it is hoped, will bo made at a. farewell banquet, which is also being organised, and would bo accompanied by an illuminated address, which will bo sent round later to all contributors to bo signed, llattaliou. commanders are requested, therefore, to forward their contributions, either by crossed cheque or "rosscd postal notes, to the lion, treasurer not later than November 20, 1911. it is possible that this cire.nlaT may reach officers audi others also who do not lieloug ixi any battalion organisation. I am instructcil therefore 'by my committco to say thatin such cases contributions, if forwarded direct to ■ tho hou. secretary at tho address montionc-d, will bo duly acknowledged. "I am, sir, "Yours faithfully, "A. C. C. STEVENS, "Lieutenant, staff officer for Junior Cadets (lion, secretary to presentation fund) The receipt of this circular is stated to have caused some surprise and comment amongst cadet officers, the general opinion expressed being that such a suggestion as is set out in the letter should have been inspired by tho teacher-officers themselves.
