THE COP MEETING.
AT RICCARTON. BIG RACE WON BY VICE-ADMIRAL GREAT FINISH. NYLAND WINS THE STEWARDS'. FULL NOTES AND RESULTS. lUy Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Chrislchurch, November 4. It was dull weather for tho opening day of tho New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton, but the rain held off until after the Stewards' Handicap had been decided, when a heavy shower iell. Crowds of people then left the course. The attendance, however, was very largo, tho visitors including his Excellency tho Governor and Lady Islington, tho Prime Minister, the Hon. J. A. Millar, and Major-General Godlcy. There- were heavy investments on every race on the totalisator, and had the accommodation been more up to dato tho total amount, handlod might have been much larger than it was, viz., ,£39,851. However, it easily eclipsed tho total of •£27,172 for the first day last year. Tho racing was full of interest. Record time for New Zealand was established in the Hurdle Race, and a record field of twenty-nine horses contested the Stewards' Handicap.
