OBITUARY.

EX-INSPECTOR PENDER DEAD. Mr. Peter Pender, some time Inspector of Police for the Wellington district, died at Christchurch yesterday morning. He had been unwell for only a week past, but at his great age, about 84 years, any illness could scarce be other than a serious matter. Deceased was born in Mexford, Ireand, where he was educated. He followed Ins parents' occupation of farming as a boy, but when still a youth, he joined the Royal Irish Constabulary In due course ho was promoted to the rank of sergeant, and at the time of the Smith-O'Brien troubles he did duty in some of the disturbed districts. In 1854 he joined Iho Mounted Staff Corps known as Lord Raglan's, and with the company served through the Crimean war, being present during the siege of Sebastopol and in the final assault which led lo the fall of the fortress and afterwards at the Battle of Tehenere. After some further service in Turkey-in-Asia he returned to Ireland, and rejoined the Constabulary. In 1856 Mr. Pender landed in Victoria, and after trying his, luck on the Ovens Goldfield, he joined the Victorian police as a constable. In 1862, ho with three others volunteered to assist in the police force of Canterbury, and in 1864 he was promoted to the rank of inspector. Ho was transferred to Wellington in 1892 which district he controlled until his retirement from the force on pension in March, 1902. Inspector Pender held the Crimean medal with the Sebastopol clasp, the Turkish medal, and the New Zealand long-service medal. The Iate Inspector Pender leaves an adult family of six-two sons and four daughters The sons are Mr. Arthur Pender, of Wellington. and Mr Frank Pender, who is on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Ashburton The daughters are Mrs. Lee, of Sumner, and Misses Grace, Mary, and Eileen Pender, who reside in Christchurch. Mrs. Pender predeceased her husband by about 20 years.
