CITY AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of tho Wellington City Council was held, last night. His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. T. 11. Wilford, M.P.) presided, and there were also prosent: Councillors John Smith, F. Cohen, G. Frost, J. Trevor, A. R. Atkinson, ]j. M'Kcnzie, J. E. Fitzgerald, John Fuller, jun., It. Fletcher, A. U. Itindmarsh, D. M'Larcn, M.P., It. A. Cameron, Geo. W. ShirtcM'e, and W. 11. P. Barter.

It was resolved that in future, when Town Belt sections are cleared of gorse, etc., by the Reserves Department, such sections bo put up for lease by auction at upset rentals, instead of leasing by tender, and also that the council continuo to keep the sections clear, the rentals being fixed to cover such expenditure. The Outlying Districts Committee recommended, and it was agreed, that tho Hntaitai Municipal Electors' Association bo informed in reply to their request (hat the drainage bo extended to Ivainui Koad, that tho cost of such extension (estimated at .£250) is more than can be expended at present.

.Notices were authorised to bo served on tho owners and occupiers of tho undermentioned premises to carry out repairs to same, as recommended bv the Department of Public Health, viz:—3l Lome Street, 33 and 31 Cambridge Terrace, 104 Adelaide Road, 145 Taranaki Street, 96 Adelaide Road, 5 John Street.

Commendation notices were authorised to bo served with respect to washhouse at rear of premises 104 Adelaide I'oad; temporary structures at Taranaki Street; wnshhoure at rear of No. 06 Adelaide Itoad; washhouso at re<ir of No. 5 John Street; premises, No. 131 Tnranaki Street; premises, Nos. 17, 17a, ITb Courtenay Place j stable and shed, rear of premises, Kent Terrace; premises, .\'o. 4G Tory Street.

It was decided to inform the applicants for the erection of a flamo arc lamp at the corner of Vivian and Tory Streets that, as it is proposed to replace tho Vivian Street are lamps with 300 candlepower "Osrains," the matter will bo dealt with before next winter.

A petition was receivod from tho occupiers of housefurmshing shops in tho city, as to closing hours. As tho petition did not contain tho names of o majority of tho occupiers of all 6hops in tho city, no further action was falcon. The council decide:! that, in future, tho city engineer be instructed net to extend any sewer for more than 50 fctt for tho purpose of draining one hoiifo, nnd that the department bo authorised to lay additional sewers to this extent, spcc.idl consideration to be given to spccial cases.
