POLITICAL SENSATION.

MISTAKE IN ELECTION WRIT. ■ A sensation was caused in Victorian political circles on Friday last by a discovery that a mistake was made 011 Tuesday in publishing tho. proclamation for the "dissolution of tho Legislative Assembly. ■ This proclamation was. not. signed ,bv the Governor. He merely signed the instructions. Through a misunderstanding, however, an othcer made a copy of the order published when Sir Thomas Gibson Cariniehael dissolved the Legislative Assembly thrco years ago, and having altered tho dates, sent it out in the "Gazette" with tho prorogation proclamation. When tho mistake was discovered it was at first feared that the publication of tho proclamation in this lorm must automatically causo a dissolution of tho Legislative Assembly on that date, October -'J, instead of 011 October 31, as had been- intended. If this were true it would, of course, require consequential alterations in the election dates, bringing everything forward one week.

Legal advice 011 tho subject was immediately taken by the Ministry, and tho Governor, who was absent 011 a visit to tlio western district, was informed of tho difficulty. His Excellency at once signified his intention of returning to Melbourno to collier with tho Ministers. He arrived late last night, and had a conference with the Ministry. His Excellency has decided to take certain action to-day to set the matter right. It is understood that 110 alteration will be necessary in the election dates, and that another corrected proclamation will be issued.
