Tlie South African Government has been inquiring among shipbuilders in Britain as to what it would cost to build a fleet of mail steamers, should tho State dccido to run its own vessels in conscquenco of tho non-rcccipt of tenders for tho ocean mail contract.
It has been ascertained that a Hoot of seven steamers would cost .£3,500,000.
