WATERSIDE STRIKE.
MORE STEAMERS LAID UP. By Telesraph.—Press Association—CoDjricht (R«c. November 1, 0.15 a.m.) Sydney, October 31. Mr. Carmichaol, Minister lor Labour, has withdrawn his stevedoring proposal. A special meeting of tho wharf labourers will be hold to-morrow night, to discuss tho advice given by tho Melbourne conference to resume work.
The crews of the steamers Cyclo, Mo* ruya, and Period have been paid off.
The permanent hands and clerks oto doing good work in shifting cargo. Some vessels are discharging, and have received quantities of general loading, as well as perishables.
LABOUR GOVERNMENTS POWER. LESS. CRITICISM BY MR. COOK. (Rec. November 1, 0.35 a.m.) Melbourne,' October 31. In discussing tho Arbitration Bill in the House of Representatives, Mr. Joseph Cook (New South-Wales) referred.to the wharf labourers' strike, and declared that it was a scandal to have two Labour Governments each saying they could not act.
ARBITRATION ACTA DEAD LETTER. MR. CARMICHAEL'S OFFER. Sydney, October 31. Business people express great dissatisfaction at the apparent inability of the Government to cope with the situation resulting from tho strike. They declare that the Arbitration Act is a dead letter. The Minister for Labour (Mr. A. C. Carniichacl) is disappointed at tho nonacceptance of his offer to do stevedoring. He states that ho understood that tho parties who waited on the Government were anxious to prevent loss to the producers and the country. Ho was apparently mistaken.
MELBOURNE WORKERS' ATTITUDE. ICO SUPPORT FOR THE STRIKERS. Melbourne, October 31. Tho Trades' Hall Council discussed a letter from Mr. Morris, secretary of the Watersido Workers' Federation, requesting its support in an endeavour to persuade tho men to return to work. Mr. Morris states an agreement was honourably ontered into, and was broken without provocation or notice. Tho discussion was adjourned. The Melbourne wharf labourers condemn the action of tho strikers.
