MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) TRENTHAM EPISODE. THE DECISION RESERVED. The hearing of evidence in tho case in which Vv. J. Drew and John Smith (otherwise James M'Crca) were charged with that, being bookmakers, they did bat on tho Trentham racecoursc on October 23, was concluded yesterday. Detective Mason corroborated the evidence given by Private-Detective Kraetzor at the previous hearing, lie stated that ho was sure that the accused had for the time being been acting as bookmakers. He was certain that money had actually passed between Drew and 'Smith and other persons on tho course. Mr. J. J. M'Urath, lor the accused, put up tho plea of "no case." That being so, he did not propose to call any witnesses. In a case of this kind the police were obliged to make good their case ''beyond the shadow of a doubt." Decision was reserved. OTHER CASES. Edith Home, who pleaded guilty, was fined £2 for breaking a prohibition order, and Peter Chalmers, who professed innocence,' was fined a like amount on a similar accusation. Alexander Churchman was fined ill for having been drunk. Edward Pointon was fined .El for disobedience of a maintenance order; Arthur Lewis Maguire was fined .C 2; Thomas Carswell was sent to Wellington Prison for seven days. Herbert John Carroll was ordered to pay 2s. a week towards his father's support. Mary Thompson admitted that she was guilty of having stolen .£ls from Stephen '.rarkham. She was remanded till November 1 for sentence. Threatening ljohaviour, which occasioned a breach of the peace, was alleged against Cornelius O'Counell and James Sldlling. They pleaded guilty and were fined .61 each. Harry White, alias Brown, was charged with the theft of a bicycle, valued at £7 10s., tho property of Robert Hoffman. He was remanded till to-day.
