A similar amount represented the loss on tho working of the boys' department. CONSPICUOUS BRAVERY. Auckland, October 30. Mr. S. Francis, now employed by tho Auckland Gas Company, has reosived a mossage that his Majesty tho King desires to personally confer on him a decoration for conspicuous bravery. Mr. Francis, at great risk of his own life, descended a pit and rescued two mates who had been overcome by poisonous fumes. Mt. Francis leaves for England in December. WRECKAGE. Auckland, October 30. Tho Harbour Board have provisionally accepted the tender of Messrs. Langland aud Co., of Nelson, for. tlio extension of the Gisborne breakwater for a distance of 200 feet. The contract was the only one received and the price was .£13,799. Tho schedule has to contain all the specifications of the engineer, and a committee has been appointed to go through it.
