CRUISER FOR CANADA.

A NEW PURCHASE. By TclcEraph-Pres's Association-OoDTright Malta, Octobor 29. It is stated hero that the Canadian Government has purchased the cruiser Aboukir. Tlio Aboukir is an armoured cruiser of 12,000 tons displacement, built in 1900 at Goran, at a cost of JE7oi,llß. She carries two 9.2-inch guns, and twelve G-incli guns, besides a dozen 12-poundcrs and smaller guns. Her engines develope 21,375 horsepower, giving a speed of 21.G knots. The vessel's complement is 755 men. 'ITio Canadian Government, in pursuance of its naval programme, in May last received tlio tenders for the construction of four second-class cruisers, approximately similar to the Town class cruisers of tlio Ifoyal Navy, and six destroyers. The programme in its original form, as decided at tlio Conference of 1909, consisted of these ten ships with, in addition, one third-class cruiser of tlio lioadicea typo. It was decided, however, not to build the third-class cruiser, as Canada had acquired the old first-class protected cruiser Niobo from tho Eoyal Navy for something Ices than the cost of such a ship, and had decided to consider her as a substitute for tho projected Boadicca. Apparently the Aboukir will take tho place of another of the new vessels which it was originally proposed to build.
