MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) EIGHT WHARF LABOURERS CHARGED. Eight wharf labourers—Alfred Nelson, Donald Jl'l'herson, Anton Olson, John llindle, William Young, 1". L. Backhouse, James Wright, and Harry Douglas —were charged with stealing a quantity of tobacco belonging to tlie L'nion Steam Ship ComiKiny. Jlr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the accused. Chief Dctcctive Broborg asked for a remand. He said the allegation was that theft had been committed on the steamer Monna on Friday, while tlie vessel was discharging cargo. It liarl been found that a box of tobacco had been pillaged, and Detectives Andrews and Lewis had arrested the accused. Remand till Wednesday was granted, and bail was allowed.
