Sir George Reid, High Commissioner for Australia in a speech at tho launching of the battle-cruiser Australia, said that treaties of peace between Britain, France, and America were- all very well, but what was wanted was such a treaty with Germany as would mean something to tho benefit of trado and commerce. Meantime, warships prevented wrong and preserved peace, and in that spirit they had launched tho Australia. Admiral Sir R. Henderson, who recently reported on Australian naval defences, said tho Commonwealth was creating a naval' spirit which would fit it to bo an efficient member of the Empire, which was now more than ever dependent on its sea power.
