ANTIPODEAN IDEALS.

-~ e IN SCHOOL ART CRITICISM. A curious commentary on tho diversity of ideals among art critics was disclosed in a report presented In Jtr. W. S. La Trobo (Director of the Wellington Technical School) to his board last evening on tho successes obtained by students of tho school in art competitions. The followin? successes wcro won by students of the Wellington Technical School at tho National Competitions in London:— Miss Violet Nelson—Book prize, and commended for shaded drawings of a head from life. Miss Ethel P. Gyles—Commended for model of head from life. Miss M. T. Williamson—Commended for 6hadod studies of birds and oats, from nature. Wilfred Nelson Isaac—Commondod for 6hadcd studies of birds, from nature, "Tho school," reported the director, "thus won-five awards. Only ono Other award, a 'commended,' camo to New Zealand." Tho awards secured by tho school at tho New Zealand Aoadoniy of Fine Arts were :— Six firsts out of 13; two seconds out of thTeo; two commendeds out of two; ten awards out of 18. "Where other schools competed, tho school was not so successful,' observed Mr. La 'Probe. "This is in marked contrast with the results obtained in tho National Competitions in London. Work sent to London after the exhibition hero was differently judged in the Old Country." It was a singular circumstance, ha added, that work which was rejected in New Zealand was accepted at Homo, and work which was accepted hew was rejected at Horao. "Different ideals," observed Mr. J. Q. W. Aitkcn. Tho chairman (Mr. D. Eobortson) thought that tliC report was a very satisfactory one.
