« INNOVATION YESTERDAY. The direct steamer from Sydney yesterday—the Ulimaroa—mis tho first steamer to como right up to her berthage at Wellington without waiting in tho stream for medical examination. Tho vessel, upon arrival, dropped anchor, but, owing to the heavy "northerly" which prevailed and tho fact that tho anchors wcro dragging, it was decided to berth tho vessel. Upon berthing, the port health officer and the Customs officials boarded the vessel, no communication being allowed meantime with tho shore until prntiquo was finally granted. Tho berthing of tho vessel bri'ore medical examination seemed to work satisfactorily yesterday, and saved a good deal of time. It was tried somo time ago at Auckland with similar success. It.JI.S. lonic also omitted to carry out tho usual custom of anchoring in the stream to await medical inspection. Tho vessel came straight up to the King's Wharf, and tho port health officer then boarded her.
