FIRST DAY'S RESULTS. STOCK DISPLAY AND AWARDS, (By Tolegrapli— Special Reportor.) Carterton, October 25. Onco again the popular AVairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society has had a wet day for tho opening of its annual show. It has rained heavily all day, and thoro is little- prospoet—at least to tho eye of tho amabonr weather render—of to-morrow being fine. Tho ground has boon nearly deserted throughout tho day, but, fair weather or fine, thero is sure to bo a good attendance to-morrow. To-day the jumping in tho ring was accomplished minus accident, although tho ground was greasy. Very few of tho ;horses were, judged to-day, and tho niajorjity have to co.:no up for scrutiny to-mor-tow. . There was good' competition in tho ■cattlo classes, and some splendid speci■mens of tho Shorthorn breed were shown. Wairarapa and Hawko's Bay had somo of the best of tho famous fat breed in ■■ the pens- The bull championship went to Mr. AV. C. Buchanan, but Mr. W. T. 'Williams took tho honours for cow to Eawko'3 Bay. Wairarapa is a groat Holstcin country, and that was reflected in tho pons to-day. Both the championships went to tho Manawatu breeder, Mr. W. I. Lovelock, whoso Cliffsido Laddie added another championship to his list of honours, and .who -won tho cow .championship with Lady Melba. Mr. Newton King's stock were prominent again, and thero were «lso other breeders who did very well. Thoro was great competition in tho Ayrshire section,.and the quality was commented on by several judges as being the best which they had seen at a show for many years. Thero was not a very great variety of competition in the Jersey division, but some very nice types-wero penned. The sheep competitions were, on tho whole, very well patronised. Tho Lineolns and the Eomneys wero of great quality, and the entries nuito satisfactory numerically. Tho entries wero less in the Leicester..Southdown, and the Shropshire classes, but tho quality was not to bo found fault with. The Quibell Cup was ,won by Messrs. Nelson Bros. Only a small competition camo forward for tho pig prizes. Tho produce-shed contained a fino display of cheese and butter, and a pleasing display of Uk results of home industry. . The judges are as follow:—Leaping ant' trotting competitions and thoroughbreds ami light horses, Messrs. Ewnn V. Campbell (Cambridge) and H. Gaisford (Cringf Bawke's Bay),; draught horses, Mr. A. Smith (Christclvurch); Shorthorn cattle : Mr. W. Taylor (To Awatnutu) ; fat cattle : Mri W. B. Archibald (Knramu, Hastings) Ayrshire cattlo, Mr. A. Gillies (Hamp den);- Jersey cattle, Mr. J. A. M'Cre<i (Palnierston North); Holsteius, Mr. AV Al. Barribal (Wniuku): milkers, Messrs J. A. M'Crea, A., Gillies, and W. M Barribal; Lijioolns, Mr. E. Bremnei . (AVnverley); Romneys, Mr. P. Mungavir : (Porirua); Leicester sheep, Mr. W. AVelsl i (Dannevirke); Down classes, Mr. W Little (Argyle East); fat sheep, Mr. W. P Archibald (Hastings); pigs, Mr. R. Per ritfc (Sa;ndon); dogs, Mr. S. Johnston (Pal merston. North); poultry and pigeons, Mr S. Johnston (Palnierston North); wool Mr. J.
