THE COMPETITIONS.
If; is difficult now to predict what dimensions the festival of the New Zealand Competitions Society will ultimately attain. Indeed, there seems to be no pood reason why in the end tiie affair should not lie as big as the yearly event at Ballarat. The great array of special prizes has done much to heighten enthusiasm this opening year, but most of tho competitors still like the contests for their own sake. Tho bigger such festivals get the bigger they are likely to become, since the honour of winning increases in cxact proportion as the number of rivals grows. Oue thing nuiv be anticipated already. This festival, which opens this morning, will easily eclipse all previous evcats of tlie ldud in .N'cw Zealand.
