) THE : COUNCIL, LOCAL ELECTIONS AND POLLS. SOME LOCAL BILLS. Tho Legislative Council met at 10.30 yesterday morning, when tho batch .of local Bills passed by the House on Mon-" clay were read a first time, and referred to various committees. After a brief sitting, tho Council adjourned until 2.30 p.m.
_ On resuming at 2.30 p.m., the following Hills wero reported from the Local Bills Committee, unci put through their final stages aud passed:—rOtago Hoard Empowering Bill, Rivorton Harbour Board Loan and Empowering Bill, Manukau Harbour Control Bill, Ross Borough Council Vesting and Empowering Bill, and the Onehunga Borough "Vesting Bill. Tho Lyttelton Borough •extension Bill was referred hack to tho Local Bills Committee. Tho New Plymouth High School Bill na discharged from tho Order Paper. LOCAL ELECTIONS BILL, In Committee - on tho Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill, Tho ATTORNEY GENERAL remarked that he had looked into a suggestion made by tho Hon. 0. Samuel, and he agreed that Clause 3 (which provides that when a day has been appointed for holding an election or for taking a poll on any proposal, and such day is subsequently set apart for a public holiday, tho elretion shall bo held or the poll taken on another day) should be deleted. Thero was, he said, ample provision in the law at present for meeting any unforeseen case, and the clause might give rise to confusion if it was •retained. v Tho Bill was reported with this amendment, and was then read a third time, and passed. : LEGISLATURE , AMENDMENT BILL. The Legislature. Amendment Bill was reported from Committee with minor amendments, designed to make tlie purpose of tho Bill more clear. The third reading was agreed to, and the Bill passed. WIDOWS' PENSIONS. A message was received from the House of Representatives coverin" the amendment of the Widows' Pensions Bill, to the effect that no pension shall bo payable to a widow who is in receipt of an income of over a year. This amendment had been put forward in the Council, but had to he brought down to tho House by," Governor's Message. The amendment was agreed to. AN AUCKLAND BILL'DROPPED. The ATTORNEY-GENERAT,, speaking to the Auckland University College Amendment Bill, which was set down For further consideration in Committer, ■ paid that if the Bill was delayed until next year tho Auckland people would : perhaps come to some agreement on it. It was not desirable that the Bill should bo forced on any section of the people ' It lifitl been decided that the best course would be to discharge the Bill from the Order Paper, and so enable it to bo reintroduced in another iorm next year. The Bill was discharged. Ihe Council rose at 4 p.m., and will ineet again at 11' o'clock this morning.
