ELECTORAL ROLLS.

TO BE ISSUED TO-DAY OR TOMORROW. PROBABLE DATFj OF ELECTION, The anxiety of many people to knoir if they nro on tho electoral roll to bo used in connection, with the approaching general cOection has boon accentuated a great deal by the phases through which the roll has pawned sineo the last general election. It will, therefore, bo of general interest to know that all the main rolls which alfect Wellington City, will bo' issued this week.

Tho Wellington Central roll, which has been prepared under UlO direction of Mr. G. G. llodgkins, will be ready to-day. It contains 10,410 names, as against !it!77 on the roll printed in March last. Tho amount of work entailed in compiling a roll can bo gathered from the following' figures uunplied by the Upturning Officer for Wellington Central yesterday• Number of alterations in addresses iviiili;in tho district, ilOOO; nuiiibci; of transfers to other electoral districts, and removal by death, III; new claims received since tho electoral census, .'IL'OO; names added to the roll by alterations ill tlio boundaries, ,'iOOO. Having completed tho compilation of tlio main roll Mr. Hodgldns and his stall' will proceed at onco with tilin supplementary roll. It behoves all adults entitled to vote to wo tliat they arc on the roll, so that if by any accident they are not, stops may at onea Ixs taken to get their names on tlio su]>plcmeutary roll. This roll closes tho day 011 w.liich the writ;? for tlio election nro issued. What day that will bo lias yet to l>o decided by tho Government. Mr. Hodgkins's office is in the Government Life Buildings. Panama Street. Mr. J. W. ITill, returning officer for Wellington East, states that bis main roll will be ready to-morrow. Mr. Hill is conducting his operations from tho • Tourist Office at the corner of Whitmort and Stout Sti'eets. The main roll for Wellington I\orth will bo ready to-dav. Jt contains about 9000 names. In order that every person may get tho earliest c.ha.nce of inspecting tlio rolls, Mr. Holmes, the chief returning officer, intends to place copies of tha rolls in every police station, post office, on tlio Queen's Wharf, and in tho news■paper offices. _ Mr. Salmon, returning officer for Wellington South, was first in tho field with his main roll, which was completed on Saturday last. This is all the more creditable (is his stall had to cover more; ground than any of tlio others in Wellington, tho district hbretcliing from Plimmerton, 011 the north, to Seatollll, 011 the south. Furthermore, tlio district was greatly out about by tho alterations to the boundaries, 110 fewer than 4000 names having been transferred to Wellington East, North, and South. The main roll contains 718.1 names, as against 90S:i at the last election. Tho question was asked yesterday as to whether a person whose name has been included 011 the main roll of one district could not, on moving to another, register 011 tho (supplementary roll of tho new district, and thereby become entitled (on paper) to two votes. The answer was that this lias been made almost impossible by a system of cross check. Every--0110 wlio desires to bo registered on tho supplementary roll is required to give liis last address :ind electorate. Beforo being enrolled the registers aro looked up nnd. tho name traced. When found, tho officials of that district are notified, and tho name is crossed off, which clears tho waT to registration under tho elector's new address. Though 110 official statement lias boon made, it is understood that the general election will take place on Wednesday, .\'o void bar 29.
