iFrom Our Ssecial Corrcsnondenl.i Palmerston, October 23. The Municipal Hall was crowded on Saturday night, when Mr. W. Thompsou, a candiuato for tho Palmorston seat at tho general election, gavo au address on the toniperanco question. Mr. Thompson is a champion for temperance as against prohibition, and ho had to put up with a good deal of heckling at the hands of tho prohibitionists. He is, however, a strong platform speaker and quick at repartee, and held his own throughout, though tho chairman (the Mayor) had to appeal lor n fair hearing for him on several occasions. At Fullers' Theatre last night there was another big crowd, | when the other side had an innings, addresses on No-License being given by Messrs. G. W. Morice, C. G. Taylor, and K. K. Lomas, of Wellington. Tho main electoral roll for Palmcrston is now complete, and contains nearly seven thousand names. It is anticipated that tho supplementary roll will contain nearly a thousand more. "Naval Explorers of Britain" is to bo tho subject of essays for which tho Palincrston branch of tho Navy League is offering prizes. Theso are to bo competed for by iiupils of the local schools. There were largo numbers of players on the greens of the Palinerston and Terrace End Bowling Clubs on Saturday afternoon. The gTcens were in fine order, but the high wind prevailing made things uncomfortable for the players. Entries for the various competitions havo closed, and play in the matches will commence at once. A team of Feilding golfers tried conclusions with tho Palmcrston players en Saturday afternoon on the Hokowhitu linlts, but suffered defeat by 6* games to IJ. The annual report, to be presented to members of tho Manawatu Caledonian Society, states that tho past year was a very successful one, the entries for Hie running and cycling events having been a record for the society. Tho statement of assets and liabilities shows a credit of .S3G 17s. 2d.
