« NEW POST FOR SIR GEORGE ASKWITH. Dy Telecraph—Press Association—Copyright London, October 22, It is officially announced that Sir G«orgo Askwith has been appointed Chief Industrial Commissioner. Mr. Georgo S. Barnes, C.8., Comptroller of tbe Companies Department of the Board of Trade, succeeds Sir G. Askwith as Comptroller of tbo Labour Statistical Departments of the. Board. Mr. Robert C. S. Heron-Maxwell (Assistant Secretary) succeeds Mr. Barnes. It is claimed for Sir George Askwith that he has settled more disputee between labour mid capital than any other living man. A recent writer said of him: —'Mir. Askwith is fifty years of age, and rather above the average height. His face suggests the possession of a gift of dry humour, and when settling a dispute hfl is always ready to calm anger with a witty remark. No man better understands tho details of industry; indeed, his knowledge in this field 16 encyclopaedic. No man has a surer tact, and he is always able, to enter into tho views both of employers and employed. Ko is quiet and reserved in manner. "Araong 'ho triumphs of his career as arbitrator, which has covwrl nearly a hundred disputes some of thr:m of tha gravest character, must be counted tho settlement of tho cotton dispute in the autumn of last year, of tho strike, in Belfast, (hiring which tho troops were compelled to fire on tho crowd, and of the great dispute between tho railway companies and their employees, which neaj-ly led to a general strike. ".Mr. Askirith became a King's Counsel in. lOCS. Ho had previously acted as counsel for tho Commissioner of Works and for the Crown in peerage claims and in tho Venezuela arbitration, lie Toprcsented lord Dunravcn in tho ValkyrieDefender dispute in New York. Ho is popular and a good sportsman."
