ROAD RACING.

; CHAMPIONSHIP AND SHIELD. The annual road raco for tho teams' championship aud White Mackay Shield was run ou Saturday afternoon over the usual course from the To Aro Baths to tho Patent Slip and back. Only three clubs started teams—the Wellington and Brooklyn Harriers and tho Wellington A-A. Club, the entry being a sad fallingoff from the nominations for previous years. The opening of the cricket season, tho races, and other attractions may, however, account for this. 'Die conditions of tho race permitted six runners to constitute a team, and the first four in any combination to reach the winaing post to score points for tho shield. Both of the Harrier Clubs started a complete team, while tho AVclliugton Athletic Club was represented by five men, making a total of 17 starters. Tho starter, Mr. W. H. Pollock, got the men away punctually at 3.30. On the return journey, when the runners showed up at Pt. Jcrningham, F. Byrne (Brooklyn) and C. Rowberry (Wel-

lington Harriers) were in the lead, running shoulder to shoulder, with Hodson (Brooklyn) third, about 30 yards away. Itowbrrry had east a shoe two miles from home, and in all probability this misforlune cost him the race, as, in the s-print home, he wa.s bcul.cn by Byrne by a narrow margin of three yards.' The Brooklyn mini holds the individual championship for tho ensuing year. Hcdson (Brooklyn) was third, and F. Bowbcrry /Wellington) fourth. Cook and Murray, both of Brooklyn, were fifth and sixth, thus (Kiinpiotiiig the necessary scoring for Brooklyn, which, team secured the championship with first, third, fifth aud sixth places. Wellington Harriers were .second with second, fourth, seventh and tenth places. Piueknoy. of the Wellington A.A. Club, had the misfortnno to lose his turning-point ticket on the home run, and utter finishing ninth was disqualified, but. this mado no difference to the'result. Fitzgerald, who finished eighth, was the first'of the W.A.A.C. Club team to reach the tape. The A.A.C. men were outpaced by the Harriers. The times of the winners were:—!'. Byrne. 2fimin. 19 2-s?ee.; Rowborry, 26niin. 20 ;!-ssec.; Hodson, 26 min. 37sec.
